A rare, deadly outbreak reaches its end
Ethiopia has officially declared the end of its first Marburg virus outbreak after completing a 42-day period without any new confirmed infections. The outbreak began in November 2025 in the country’s south, near the South Sudan border, and quickly raised alarm because Marburg—related to Ebola—can cause severe hemorrhagic disease and high fatality rates.

Authorities reported 14 confirmed cases during the outbreak, including nine deaths and five recoveries. Officials also recorded additional deaths categorized as possible Marburg cases. Health workers were among those infected, underlining the risks faced by frontline staff during viral hemorrhagic fever emergencies.
How Marburg spreads and why outbreaks are hard to contain
Marburg virus is typically linked to fruit bats, and it can spread between people through direct contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces and materials. Once symptoms begin—often fever, muscle pain, vomiting and severe weakness—patients can deteriorate rapidly, and death can occur from shock and blood loss.
Because early symptoms can resemble other common illnesses, public health responses rely heavily on fast detection, isolation, infection prevention in healthcare settings, safe burials and thorough contact tracing. In resource-constrained settings, each of those steps can be difficult to sustain at scale, especially in remote areas.
International support and what comes next
The World Health Organization supported Ethiopia’s response with technical help across surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, clinical care and logistics. Even as the outbreak is declared over, health agencies typically maintain heightened vigilance, improve readiness and keep training and supplies in place to reduce the chance of future flare-ups.
