Accra Sports Stadium will not host competitive football until Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against The Gambia, a decision that affects clubs planning to use the venue during the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) is keeping the stadium closed to allow necessary work to be carried out and to give the facility time to meet standards required by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Clubs that had planned to play their home matches at the Accra venue will therefore need to find alternative grounds for the start of the league season.
Ghana’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign is scheduled to begin away to Ivory Coast on 24 September 2026. The match will be played at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké.
The Black Stars are then due to play their first home qualifier against The Gambia at Accra Sports Stadium three days later. The fixture will be held at the stadium provided the venue is cleared for the match.
The closure means the stadium will not be available for competitive football before that planned home qualifier. The NSA’s decision is intended to provide time for the work needed ahead of Ghana’s AFCON qualifying campaign, while the clubs affected by the decision arrange other venues for their league fixtures.
