A major winter system dubbed Winter Storm Fern spread snow, ice and extreme cold across wide swaths of the country, disrupting transportation and daily routines from the South through the Midwest and into the Northeast. Flight-tracking tallies showed the storm produced one of the worst stretches for U.S. air travel since the early pandemic era. Between Saturday and early Monday, cancellations approached roughly 19,000-plus flights across U.S. airports, with Sunday standing out as the most disruptive day of the weekend. Large hub airports reported heavy disruption, including Dallas-Fort Worth, where a significant share of scheduled flights were called off during the peak period. Other major airports—from Charlotte to the New York City region—also saw high cancellation volumes as the storm tracked eastward and cold air surged southward. Airlines expanded rebooking options, waived change fees on some routes, and worked to reposition planes and crews to rebuild schedules.
Beyond aviation, the storm’s hazards included icy roadways, reduced visibility, and localized power outages. Officials in multiple states urged drivers to avoid unnecessary trips, while local governments adjusted school and public service schedules to keep people off dangerous roads.

Even after precipitation eases, recovery can take days because airlines must untangle aircraft rotations and crew duty-time limits, while airports clear gates, ramps and taxiways.
