Ethiopia has officially declared the end of its first Marburg virus outbreak after reaching the standard benchmark of 42 days without any new confirmed infections. Health authorities said the outbreak began on November 14, 2025, in the country’s south near the border with South Sudan and resulted in confirmed cases and deaths.

The end-of-outbreak announcement does not mean risk has disappeared, but it does indicate that chains of transmission were interrupted and that surveillance did not detect new spread over a sustained period. How Marburg spreads and why it is feared

Marburg is a viral hemorrhagic fever linked to fruit bats and can spread through contact with bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces. Severe illness can involve high fever, body aches, vomiting, and dangerous bleeding, and outbreaks can overwhelm health systems when infection control measures are strained.
