A new study warns that the United States may be more vulnerable to outbreaks and health emergencies because many federal public-health tracking systems were not updated routinely in 2025. Researchers found that nearly half of the health surveillance databases maintained by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention either stopped updating or posted data with significant delays, according to a HealthDay News report summarizing the findings published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

While the issue is framed as a public-health concern, it also has clear economic and operational implications. Businesses, hospitals, schools, and supply chains increasingly rely on timely disease surveillance to manage staffing, demand surges, travel planning, and infection-control policies. When national indicators lag, local decision-makers may be forced to rely on incomplete signals, which can increase disruption costs during fast-moving outbreaks.
What the researchers say changed
The study reported that nine out of ten affected databases collected nationwide information on vaccinations or vaccine-preventable illnesses, including major respiratory threats such as flu, COVID-19 and RSV. Other disrupted systems tracked infectious diseases and drug overdose deaths—areas where week-to-week changes can matter for resource allocation and emergency response.
Researchers described the pattern as a serious failure of routine updating, warning that inconsistent reporting can undermine trend detection. For example, a community may see rising transmission locally, but without consistent national context it can be harder to know whether a spike is isolated, part of a regional surge, or the front edge of a broader wave.

During the pandemic era, employers and investors learned that health metrics can quickly translate into operational impacts: absenteeism, shifts in consumer behavior, pressure on insurers and hospitals, and changes in travel and retail patterns.
